Murcia airport (MJV) in San Javier Spain

Murcia airport (MJV) is conveniently located just off the AP7 highway in San Javier. It is a relatively small airport but is an essential hub for the surrounding area.

Among the airport facilities is a bar/cafeteria, a duty-free/duty-paid shop, and an ATM (cash machine). There is ample parking directly in front of the terminal building, along with car hire facilities.

The active runway for landing (either 050 (heading north east) or 230 (heading south west)) will depict the scenery on your final approach to the airport, as will which side of the aircraft you are seated.

If the active runway is 230 (heading south west) then on the final approach you will see the resort of La Manga out of the port-side (left-hand side) of the aircraft.

The airport is located close to the Mediterranean sea and is only a few metres above sea level. If you are heading 230 (south west) you get a wonderful view of the sea out of the port-side (left-hand side) of the aircraft.

When you have touched down at Murcia airport, you will usually find yourself disembarking straight onto the tarmac.

You may have an airport bus waiting for you, but more often than not, you will have to take a short walk to the terminal building. If you or anyone travelling in your party require mobility assistance always inform your airline prior to departure.

note: Murcia airport operates a no-smoking policy throughout the airport terminal building.

Once inside, follow the signs to the baggage claim, if you only have hand luggage, follow the signs for the exit (which is actually located in the baggage claim area). You may have to pass through a passport control checkpoint (depending on the origin of your flight), so have your passport to hand.

There are only a few baggage carousels in the baggage area at Murcia airport, check the screens for the carousel assigned to your flight number. The baggage transfer from aircraft to terminal at Murcia is normally very efficient, so you should not have to wait long for your luggage (in our experience less than 18 minutes after leaving the aircraft).

Flying out from Murcia airport (MJV)

When you arrive at Murcia airport the parking facilities will be on your left and the terminal building on your right. There are two entrances to the airport, one for arrivals (on your left while facing the terminal) and one for departures (on your right when facing the terminal).

If you enter the airport using the departures entrance, the check-in desks are located at the back of the terminal building, directly in front of you. The bar/cafeteria will be on your immediate right as you enter the airport, in case you fancy a drink!

If you need to buy an air ticket from one of the sales desks, turn left and head towards where the arrivals hall is located. Currently the airlines which operate a sales desk at Murcia airport include Air Berlin, Iberia, Jet2, Monarch Airlines, Ryanair and Swissport.

Once you are checked-in for your flight and ready to head air-side (if you smoke, bear in mind that once you are air-side you won't be able to leave the building to light up), follow the barriers through to the security checkpoint. You may have to show your boarding card on the way to security, so have it handy.

The current security protocol at the airport requires you to remove all metallic objects from your person, including your watch (if metal), sunglasses, mobile phone and your belt. You will find plastic trays into which to place your belongings just before you reach the security scanners. If you have a laptop computer then remove it from its carrycase and place it through the security scanner in a separate tray.

When you are through security (air-side) you will find snack bars, shops and a newsagent. The departure gates are all located in the same hall as the facilities, check the monitors to confirm your boarding gate number.

Once you are through the boarding gate you will only be a short distance away from your aircraft. You may have an airport bus for transport, or you may have to walk, in which case ensure you keep to the marked walkway.

Depending on the active runway for takeoff and your seat allocation, you can have a beautiful view of the area surrounding the airport as the aircraft starts to climb. Murcia can be a joy to fly from and into, definately well worth getting a window seat for your inbound and outbound flight.
